摘要
This paper examines the impact of the SARS epidemic on the intergenerational mobility in China. Using a triple difference-in-differences framework, the SARS epidemic is found to significantly increase the intergenerational transmission of education. Our results suggest that a one percent increase in the SARS case number lead to the maternal intergeneration transmission parameter to be increased by 8.7 percent. The effect of the SARS epidemic is stronger for admission to 3-year college programs and concentrates mainly on female students and urban students. These results convey the warning message that pandemics may reduce intergenerational mobility of education.
