摘要:Globally, hundreds of millions of people have attended college in the last few decades. Because college applicants infer college quality from visible traits, efforts to improve college reputation can potentially impact both college choice and graduates’ early labor market performance. We study how one common practice to improve college reputation – colleges changing their names to signal higher quality – affects these two outcomes. Using a large administrative dataset from China, we show that colleges who change their name attract more qualified applicants, with the largest effects among applicants who have less information about the college. To understand how this impacts college graduates’ performance in the labor market, we conduct a resume audit study comprising over 14,000 job applications, estimating whether listing a college’s new name, as opposed to its old name, affects employers’ recruitment decisions. We find that employer behavior responds rationally to how college name changes affect student aptitude.
